Ma Mere Confections started humbly in 2011 by Lexi Bird in her home kitchen, after completing her classic Cordon Bleu training at Silwood School of Cookery as well as a degree in Design and Art Direction from The Red & Yellow School. This fantastic female owned business has grown from a single trestle table and a staff contingent of 1 into a fully fledged factory operation providing employment to 12 happy, hard working confectioners (and confectioners in training).
All of their products are made in the traditional way, in a slow and precise manner, for an authentic tasting product, not dissimilar to those our mothers’ used. Naturally these treats are all delicious and generally gobbled down all in one go but they also contain an element of nostalgia that, we think, really sweetens the old heart strings.
Wherever possible locally produced ingredients from local suppliers are used who have ethical and sustainable business practices; one of Ma Mere's business philosophies being to support other small entrepreneurs. The Ma Mere factory also places a large emphasis on staff growth and empowerment. Staff members start at the bottom as unskilled confectioners. Slowly they work their way up through every section in the factory, until they are fully qualified in their position.
